A Steadfast Patriot

I am spending my day watching Hamilton to remind myself of what this country is all about. Granted, it was not built with me in mind, but I’ll take it. Our idea of government was designed for white male landowners. It had to ensure that the people of Rhode Island had the same power as the people of Pennsylvania. But from this people came ideas like the story of Alexander Hamilton.

I early voted so I am sitting back and waiting on the results like everyone else. What I love about it is we are seizing the opportunity to make the system work for us, even though it is not easy. People have ideas of what the United States is all about, but we are all beginning to see that it is not what we thought. It is even better. We gotta werk!
I have participated in the voting process since I was 18. I love it. I believe in it. I have seen it work, but you have to commit to it. I am excited that so many people have registered and voted. It is going to make the jury pool look amazing.

This country is designed to work with citizens participating in the process. We have gotten lazy and wanted someone else to do it for us. We have settled for the lazy, criminal element and have lived with the consequences of it. 2020 is the year we hold people accountable. It is the year we take back our process.
Remember ya’ll we are still a relatively a young country. Lets not throw away our shot.

The attribute of the week is curious. Defined as eager to know or learn something. In ReCovery, Claire’s curiosity drove her through her mission. This can be the thing that keeps you going. How does it work in your world?

Now is the time to march for justice. It is time to peacefully protest injustice.

As we stand on this cliff of time and look back at our ancestors we have no idea what they went through. We think we know more than them because we have the benefit of knowing what happened to them, but we don’t really know.
We only know what they showed us. I doubt it can be a true representation of their experience. I think it was more of a code. It was a way of telling a story one way, but meaning something else. Like, she has a smile on her face, but what story does that smile really tell?

Women like Hattie McDaniel made the case for strong women characters who tell others what to do. She portrayed Mammy in Gone With the Wind, a role that won her an Academy Award for best supporting actress. Mammy is a slave who runs the house at a large plantation.
I wonder why she chose to play Mammy the way she did? Writers can write good things, but the actors portrayal is everything. I wonder what message was she sending us with her performance?
This weekend in the podcast, I reposted episode Are You Living Single or Designing Women? Both shows tell stories about women that will make you laugh or cry. They have strong female characters that embody attributes that I admire.
These women run the house. They run their own house. They run their own business. Like McDaniel, they challenge what we believe about our society and ourselves.
