Affirmation

This undereducated woman learned her skills in the classroom of life. She took what she knew and created a university where women could learn her skills and manage their own businesses.  In 1918, Anna Turnbo Malone started Poro College, a cosmetology school which also held a manufacturing plant, a retail store, business offices, a 500 seat auditorium, dining and meeting rooms, a roof garden, dormitory, gymnasium, bakery and chapel.

She believed she could do it. She did it.

Affirmation

Without there being an established market, Anna Turnbo Malone created products on a scale to distribute them across the country and parts of South America.

She had to believe in herself and products enough to teach women how to use them. She had to believe it would make them feel beautiful about themselves.  She had to believe in her own abilities in order to help others.

Affirmation

Anna Turnbo Malone created hair products and sold them to a point of becoming a millionaire. In order to do something like this during a time when it did not exist, there needed to exist a level of confidence to get her through.

Just because we do not see or understand how a thing is going to work out, does not mean that it is impossible. We need to believe in ourselves.

Affirmation

McKinney knew she wanted to perform. In 1928 she joined the chorus of a Broadway show.  In October of that year she landed a role in a Hollywood movie.

Knowing what you want to do and not letting others deter you from it is tenacious. When McKinney saw her career stalling out in the United States, she moved to a place where she thought would be better. She was right. If you know what your calling is, move toward it. Don’t let anything deter you.

Affirmation

Nina Mae McKinney was tenacious about her career. She was a performer who could dance, sing and act. Even though she encountered harsh racism, she spent her life performing even though at times it was impossible.

McKinney was so good at what she did, she was given a five-year contract by MGM which was unheard of for an African American actress.

Affirmation

This month the word is Tenacious. This is tending to keep a firm hold of something, clinging or adhering to it. It is being persistent and not being easily dispelled. We are more than halfway through 2024 and some of the things you plan might seem like a long shot. Be tenacious.

Affirmation

Just as taking three small pieces of cord and twisting them together makes a strong rope, having collaborations with others will help create strong projects. Many of the people who have worked in different roles have spent time collaborating with others. It is a great way to learn.
