She traveled the country, recorder in hand, gathering the songs, stories, and expressions that made up a vital, beautiful, and often ignored part of American culture.

She revolutionized hair care for Black women and used her incredible wealth to become one of the most generous philanthropists of her time, supporting countless charitable and educational institutions.
